Four Delightful Parenting Moments to Brighten Your Day

Parenting is a journey full of small, joyful discoveries — moments that often surprise us, make us laugh, or give us a fresh perspective. Recently, I came across a handful of fun ideas and stories that I couldn’t wait to share. They capture the sweetness, simplicity, and sometimes the humor of family life. Here are four gems that have been inspiring me lately.

1. The Magic of Kid’s Photography on Trips

There’s something undeniably charming about seeing the world through a child’s eyes — literally. I loved a recent story in The New York Times about encouraging kids to take photos during family trips. The idea is to hand them a camera, then watch as they capture the world in unexpected and tender ways.

One particular anecdote stuck with me: A mother gave her little boy a camera while on vacation. The boy was too short to see over a wall, so he took a photo hoping to find out what lay beyond it once the pictures were developed. It’s a sweet example of childhood curiosity and imagination meeting the wonders of technology.

This story reminded me of my cousin, who did something similar as a kid, and also of my three-year-old friend Anton’s photos from a trip years ago. Anton’s shots made us look huge and towering — a hilarious reminder of how children perceive adults and the world around them.

These little glimpses can turn a family trip into a treasure trove of memories, seen through the pure and joyful lens of a child.

2. Breakfasts That Make Mornings Easier (and Tastier)

Mornings with kids can be chaotic, but breakfast is one part of the day that can be both nourishing and fun — if you have the right ideas. Jillian Barreca, a Toronto-based recipe developer, has been sharing simple yet delicious breakfast inspirations on Instagram, and I’m eager to try some of her easy-to-make toasts with my kids.

Imagine this: caramelized bananas spread over peanut butter on toast. Sounds decadent, right? Yet it’s quick and easy — a perfect way to add a little excitement to the everyday breakfast routine.

I love that these ideas don’t demand hours in the kitchen but still bring joy and flavor to the table. Breakfast can set the tone for the whole day, and with simple tweaks, it can become something the whole family looks forward to.

3. Getting to Know Each Other with the Game “Priorities”

When friends and family drop by, it’s always nice to have something to do that’s lighthearted but meaningful. Recently, we discovered a game called Priorities that has become a new favorite for gatherings. The concept is simple yet brilliant: one person draws five cards with different scenarios or preferences, and the rest have to guess how that person would rank them.

For example, does your friend prefer baths over breakfast in bed? The game sparks laughter, surprising revelations, and often sparks conversations you wouldn’t expect. It’s a playful way to deepen connections and learn more about the people around you without the pressure of a serious “get-to-know-you” session.

It’s become our go-to icebreaker and a way to bring out the humor and warmth in any group.

4. A Live Chat with Poet and Mom Kate Baer

Lastly, I’m thrilled to share that bestselling poet and mother of four, Kate Baer, will be joining me for a live stream chat soon. Kate’s work — known for its honesty, humor, and poignancy — has resonated with so many parents navigating the chaos and beauty of family life.

In our conversation, we’ll dive into everything from books and parenting challenges to female friendships, perimenopause, and even the humble bra. Plus, we’ll answer questions from readers live, making it an interactive and intimate experience.

Final Thought: Finding Joy in the Everyday

Parenting can feel overwhelming at times, but moments like these — whether it’s seeing the world through a child’s camera lens, enjoying a simple breakfast upgrade, playing a fun game, or sharing stories with others — remind us of the joy tucked into everyday life. It’s these small, delightful experiences that build the tapestry of family memories and bring lightness to the beautiful chaos.

What little moments have brought you joy lately? I’d love to hear!
