What Nonfiction Books Are You Loving Right Now?

Fiction often steals the spotlight when it comes to book chats, but recently, a reader named Jennifer nudged us to shine a light on nonfiction. She wondered if other readers here are diving into history, nature, biographies, or essays—and if so, what gems they’ve discovered. So, here we are—ready to explore the rich and fascinating world of nonfiction!

Why Nonfiction Matters

There’s something truly special about nonfiction, especially memoirs and biographies. These books let us walk in someone else’s shoes, experiencing their struggles, triumphs, and everyday moments. Reading memoirs has a way of deepening empathy and broadening our understanding of lives far different from our own. Honestly, I sometimes think if everyone read even 40 memoirs in their lifetime, the world might be a kinder, more compassionate place.

Nonfiction opens windows into history, nature, science, psychology—real stories that illuminate truths beyond fiction. And yet, I’ll admit: while I adore memoirs, I haven’t ventured as far into other nonfiction genres as I’d like. So, I’m eager to hear what nonfiction books you love!

Memoirs and Biographies That Moved Me

Here are ten memoirs and biographies that left a lasting impression on me. Each one is a window into a distinct life, a different challenge, or a unique perspective worth embracing:

  • Tell Me How It Ends: An Essay in 40 Questions by Valeria Luiselli — A poignant exploration of immigrant children’s experiences.
  • Beautiful Country by Qian Julie Wang — A powerful story of growing up undocumented in America.
  • Normal Family by Chrysta Bilton — A candid look at family life and loss.
  • Know My Name by Chanel Miller — A courageous account of survival and reclaiming one’s voice.
  • You’ll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey by Amber Ruffin and Lacey Lamar — A blend of humor and tough truths.
  • So Help Me Gosh by Brooke Barker — A quirky, heartfelt memoir.
  • Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi — A graphic memoir about growing up during the Iranian Revolution.
  • Heating and Cooling by Beth Ann Fennelly — Tender reflections on marriage and parenthood.
  • In Love by Amy Bloom — A beautifully written meditation on love and loss.
  • When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi — A moving memoir by a neurosurgeon facing terminal illness.

Beyond Memoirs: Exploring Other Nonfiction Realms

Though memoirs are my go-to, nonfiction stretches far beyond them. History, science, nature writing, psychology, and essays all offer incredible insights. The New York Times recently shared a list of 21 nonfiction books to read this spring (you can check that out for some excellent recommendations).

If you have favorites in these areas—or others—please share! I’m especially curious about books that have opened your eyes or changed your perspective.

Your Turn: What Nonfiction Has Touched You?

What’s a nonfiction book you’ve read that stayed with you? Whether it’s a gripping biography, a mind-expanding science book, or a beautifully written essay collection, I’d love to hear. And while we’re at it, what would you name your own memoir? Sometimes imagining that title helps us reflect on our own stories.

Nonfiction reading is a journey into the real, often complex fabric of human experience. Whether you’re revisiting history, nature, or a stranger’s life story, these books have the power to connect, teach, and inspire.

Thank you, Jennifer, for sparking this important conversation. Now, friends—let’s swap some great nonfiction reads!
